Date chutney or khajur chutney is a great and easy sweet chutney recipe. It can add just that tangy zing to any snack. This sweet chutney recipe for chaat is finger-licking good.In cold countries or outside India, it is sometimes very difficult to find tamarind. You do visit an Indian store to get all the special ingredients we use. This recipe is a great way to get the same taste on your palette without actually searching for tamarind chutney for your food. It is easy to cook and ready within few minutes. Unlike tamarind, dates are available in most super markets and in most of your kitchen.
Bonus: It is good for increasing iron too.You can also give it to kids as it is a rich source of Iron. Great even during winters
None of those 'dahi bhallas' and 'samosas' would miss that imli chutney once you make this. This home made sweet and spicy chutney is great with nutrients too. The authenticity is a huge far cry from oily and sugar loaded processed tomato sauce.

How to make date chutney?
Chop the dates in small pieces. In case pitted dates are not available, remove the seed from regular dates and chop them. Soak these dates in warm water.

Add green chili or red chili powder, dried mango powder, salt and sugar to it and let it cool.

Blend it to make a smooth puree. Optionally you can strain it if you like it very runny.

Store in a dry bottle in a refrigerator.
Substitution
You can use rock salt or sendha namak when making this for Hindu fasting period. Also, avoid red chilli powder and chaat masala during fasting , use green chillies instead of red chilli powder
You can also use dry ginger powder instead of red chilli powder or green chillies. This will help to control the spice and can be eaten in the fasting period.
Variation
You ca
Some people like to use both dates and tamarind together. However during fasting period, only date recipe is used.
Storage
Store it in an air tight jar once it cools. It stays for 4-5 days.
