What are the six qualities of a school counseling program? ›

A comprehensive school counseling program (CSCP) has six qualities that make it an effective program. To be comprehensive a school counseling program must be holistic, systemic, balanced, proactive, infused into academic curriculum, and reflective.

In addition, the ASCA Model incorporates the four themes of leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and systemic change to evidence how critical it is for school counselors to work in these areas to maximize the program's impact on student achievement and student behavior.

In theory, the idea of 80-20 is good, where 80% of counseling services directly impact students, with the remaining 20% of efforts supporting these services.

The Texas Counseling Association (TCA), Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP), Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA), and Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) recommend a ratio of one counselor for every 350 students.

However, under the DOL's “80-20-30” rule, an employee may only spend 20% of their time on directly supporting tip work (for example, a bartender making garnishes or a server rolling silverware). The rule also imposes a 30-minute per shift limit for the amount of time the employee can spend directly supporting tip work.

The ASCA recommends that schools maintain a ratio of 250 students per school counselor, and that school counselors spend at least 80 percent of their time working directly with or indirectly for students.
