The Adventures of Nobita and his Papa.
Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles—Animal Adventure is a 2012 anime film from the Doraemon Film Series.
After Nobita lost a beetle fight against Gian, Nobita asks his father Nobisuke to get him a bigger, stronger rhinoceros beetle. Nobisuke, having bought Nobita a new pet, reminiscent on the past where as a child, he once had a dream encountering an ancient Golden Beetle Lord. Inspired by watching a nature documentary on giant extinct animals, Nobita then asks Doraemon to check the past if there exists any actual giant beetles from before existence of humans — one thing leads to another and soon Doraemon, Nobita, with their friends Gian, Suneo and Shizuka coming along for the ride, find themselves traveling to a futuristic 22nd-Century animal reserve called Miracle Island, where extinct prehistoric creatures roam freely and coexist peacefully with humans.
At the same time... roughly two-and-a-half decades from the present timeline, because of a case of mistaken identity, the courier from the future assigned to collect Nobita and Doraemon accidentally transports Nobita's father, Nobisuke - then eleven years old - two centuries into the future, with Nobisuke ending up amnesiac in the process. Nobita and the gang ultimately rendezvous with Nobisuke in Rokoro Village, home to a rural tribe living on Miracle Island, only for the arrival of a group of futuristic poachers to further complicate things.
Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles - Animal Adventure contain examples of:
- Adaptation Expansion: The first act is an expansion of the manga short, "Long Live the Dodo Bird", with Doraemon and Nobita intending to recapture extinct, prehistoric animals with the Time Hole in order to save their species. But rather than sending the extinct animals to an uninhabited island like in the manga, Doraemon instead sends them to the animal sanctuary in the future called Miracle Island, kickstarting the adventure.
- Animal Mecha: Sherman's minions commandeer mechs whose designs are based on prehistoric animals. Sky has a robotic Quetzalcoatlus as her steed when she attacks the village, while Sherman's lair has a giant Glyptodon mech used for intimidating his victims.
- Behemoth Battle: Sherman's gigantic Glyptodon mech against the enlarged Kabuta, thanks to Doraemon's Enlarging Ray. It ends with Kabuta ramming the mech, with Sherman still on board, off a cliff.
- Casting Gag: Be it a coincidence or not, Masako Nozawa (who was the second voice of Doraemon in the 1973 anime) got cast as a young version of Nobita's dad in this movie.
- Colon Cancer: There are two colons in the title, though some international releases will use two tilde symbols (~) in place of the second colon.
- Continuity Nod:
- In a touching moment when Nobisuke and Tamako talks about Nobita's birth, the scene is portrayed with animated footage lifted directly from the manga (specifically, the one chapter where Nobita asks Doraemon to find his "birth parents" after receiving a scolding for coming home late).
- There's a poster of Zanda Claus in Nobita's bedroom.
- Evil Poacher: A group of futuristic poachers in control of brainwashed, gigantic prehistoric animals are the main threat of the film, using their enslaved beasts and futuristic weaponry to capture animals alive. They're funded by a 22nd-Century billionaire, Sherman, who serves as the Big Bad of this particular installment.
- Extinct Animal Park: Miracle Island is a 22nd Century natural reserve and sanctuary housing various long-extinct animals, including dodos, glyptodons, wooly rhinoceroses, sabre-toothed tigers and lesser-known species like Megatherium, Chalicotherium and Ceratogaulus. The adventure is kicked off when Doraemon and Nobita finds a stray moa and decide to travel to the future and find the reserve (while Nobita tries sneaking a giant prehistoric beetle out without Doraemon's permission), but then a group of evil poachers attack the island and strand the main characters on it.
- Face Fault: Early on before the adventure gets going, Nobisuke tells Nobita and Doraemon his childhood encounter with the mystical Golden Beetle, but when Nobita tries getting Nobisuke to remember where he saw that beetle, a sheepish Nobisuke admits he "thinks it's from a dream"... cue Nobita and Doraemon collectively face-faulting.
- Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: When the time-displaced Nobisuke (minutes upon his arrival into the future) tries finding his way out of a forest clearing, he unintentionally walks off a cliff... and remains in the air for a couple of seconds until he realize there's nothing underneath him. Cue Nobisuke comically falling.
- Involuntary Group Split: After Sherman's goons assaulted Rokoro village, Suneo, Kurajo and Koron gets separated from the gang in the middle of the chaos. It was at this point when Suneo realize he needs to put his usual Lovable Coward nature aside to keep Kurajo and Kuon safe, which he did.
Suneo: [putting on a brave front to protect Koron] I'm not afraid of you! I will beat you guys! Come on!
- Island of Mystery: Miracle Island, the futuristic nature sanctuary for preserving once-extinct species — collected from the past before their extinction and sent two centuries into the future — which most of the adventure took place.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: Shortly after Nobisuke gets dragged to Miracle Island by the absent-minded Gonsuke, he gets hit by the Memory Stick (which Doraemon unintentionally left on said island) causing Nobisuke to forget who he is. A further misunderstanding with Koron leads to Nobisuke mistaking his own name as Dakke, which sticks for the rest of the film until the end of the adventure where Nobisuke gets sent back to the 1980s - with his present memories restored, but his adventures on Miracle Island erased.
- Face Doodling: Nobita gets his face scribbled by Koron after losing a drawing contest with Nobisuke, much to the amusement of Gian, Suneo, Shizuka, and the rest of the Koron village kids. Doraemon then compliments Nobita's drawing of a giant lizard is excellent... only to be informed they're supposed to be drawing Kurajo, Koron's pet dodo. But then again, art really isn't Nobita's forte (like so many other things).
- Oh, Crap!:
- When Nobisuke, after being mistook by Gonsuke to be Nobita and delivered to the future, realize he's in Miracle Island, filled with extinct, prehistoric animals.
- Doraemon gets two of these within less than three minutes of screen time during the woolly rhinoceros chase, when the Anywhere Door and Take-Copter gets destroyed in a row and he's the only one who noticed that.
- Panthera Awesome: The titular island is home to a huge, ferocious saber-toothed tiger, appearing for the first time with Nobisuke accidentally landing on it after walking off a cliff causing the tiger to run around like crazy with Nobisuke clinging on it's back for dear life. This however leads to Nobisuke's Accidental Hero moment, with the tiger scaring away Sky, Lock and Snake which are about to abduct Koron and the other village kids.
- Quirky Miniboss Squad: Sky, Lock and Snake, the three minions serving Sherman who spends much of the film antagonizing Doraemon and friends, pursuing the heroes (as well as Dakke) left and right throughout the island.
- Rhino Rampage: How the gang first meets Nobisuke - Gian and Suneo, exploring the island, accidentally agitates a prehistoric woolly rhinoceros, resulting in a chase scene they unintentionally drags young Nobisuke into until all three of them ends up stuck in a tree, needing Doraemon to come to the rescue.
- Scooby-Dooby Doors: The entire gang, including Nobisuke, had one of these in the ending underneath Sherman's Glyptodon mech with the robot's legs in place of pillars, in order to distract Sherman long enough for Kabuto to recover.
- Summon Bigger Fish: The climax. When Sherman sics his Glyptodon mech to crush the heroes, Nobita realize his lost pet rhinocerous beetle, Kabuta, had returned for him. And then Doraemon managed to find his Enlarging Light, which still have some juice in it... cue Doraemon using the light to enlarge Kabuta into a massive beetle monster to battle Sherman.
- That Was Not a Dream: Yeah, Nobisuke telling Doraemon and Nobita about his encounter with the Golden Beetle during his youth, which he assumes it was a dream? It's not, Nobisuke did witness the Golden Beetle when he's accidentally sent into the future, only for his memories to be erased again, the beetle being fragments of his memory once he's sent back to the 1980s.
- Uncanny Family Resemblance: Dakke (actually Nobisuke Nobi who was accidentally sent to the future thanks to a case of mistaken identity) looks a lot like Nobita, save for his head being shaved, to the point where Nobita's friends lampshades that they look like Identical Strangers.
- Words Can Break My Bones: Once again, Doraemon's Frozen Voice Amplifier Potion gets put to good use here, with Nobita and Gian, having drank the potion, shouts word-shaped projectiles on Sky and her robotic Quetzalcoatlus steed.
